Acclaimed new production of Shakespeare's tragedy starring Lenny Henry.
Othello
is one of Shakespeare’s most popular and frequently performed
tragedies, and with themes of jealousy, betrayal and racism, it remains
one of the bard’s most relevant works.
This new production
arrives in London after a triumphant run at the Yorkshire Playhouse and
a sellout regional tour with the unlikely but ingenious casting of
Lenny Henry in the title role. While Lenny Henry is best known for his
stand-up performances and TV sketch show, his impressive performance in
his first Shakespeare role won wild acclaim. The UK press described his
performance as ‘powerful’, ‘astonishing’ and ‘excellent’.
A
disturbing tragedy Othello is driven by the contrast between love and
obsessive hate. While the Moorish General Othello is brave, noble and
deeply in love with his wife Desdemona, soldier Iago is bitter and
ambitious, weaving an enormous web of lies to increase his standing.
Not only does Iago not realise the impact his deceipt will have on
those around him, but the consequence he causes fro himself and Othello
makes for one of Shakespeare’s most tragic endings.
