Legally Blonde the musical is another in a long line of successful musicals spawned from a Hollywood blockbuster. Based on the 2001 film of the same name (originally starring Reese Witherspoon and Luke Wilson) it is the tale of a blonde sorority queen (Elle), who, when dumped by her boyfriend, decides to dedicate herself to her studies and head off to law school.
Starting in San Francisco in 2007, Legally Blonde the musical made its way to the theatres of Broadway where it became a smash success. Opening to mostly positive reviews and grossing more than $1 million a week.
In December 2009, Legally Blonde made its way to the Savoy Theatre, where once again it proved a complete success, winning three Laurence Olivier Awards including Best New Musical, Best Actress in a Musical and Best Performance in a Supporting Role in a Musical. Before the doors even opened, the show made £2 million in advance ticket sales.
The cast of Legally Blonde has been subject to regular changes, but has included such big names as Sheridan Smith, Susan McFadden, Denise Van Outen and Natalie Casey. Yet whatever the cast line up, Legally Blonde continues to be a success, pleasing crowds from far and wide.
Legally Blonde boasts a score by Laurence O'Keefe and Nell Benjamin which includes 18 songs, 16 of which are sung by the leading lady and the star of the show. Elle also has 19 costume changes during the show!
Legally Blonde the musical is directed by Jerry Mitchell who both directed and choreographed the original Broadway production and is also known for his choreography of Hairspray which is currently playing at the Shaftesbury Theatre.
The British production of Legally Blonde is thoroughly tongue-in-cheek, it knows it is ridiculous and makes the most of being so. It's fast, fun and frothy and a musical treat. Whether you've seen the film or not, the musical version of Legally Blonde is a night out that you'll thoroughly enjoy.
