What would Christmas be without a rendition of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol? For 2011, Riverside Studios and Assembly is taking over from Tiny Tim Productions and putting on a seasonal performance at The Arts Theatre. This is the fifth year A Christmas Carol has seen a production at The Arts Theatre and surely, Simon Callow and Tom Cairns’ adaption of A Christmas Carol will entertain theatregoers and Dickens’ fanatic alike.

This year, Simon Callow replaces Gareth Hale and steps into the shoes of Ebenezer Scrooge. But don’t go expecting a standard rendition of the original text. This Riverside Studios and Assembly production is directed and designed by Tom Cairns and if previous years are anything to go by, you’ll certainly be in for a festive experience. A Christmas Carol has been given the West End treatment and the stage production has some quirks to keep the story fresh and interesting.

Simon Callow and Tom Cairns’ adaption is set to feature all the essential elements of Dickens’ story-telling for a stage production, including a phantasmagorical, hilarious, heart-breaking and visionary twist on the original story. Last year, a musical score was thrown into the mix, with puppets and the cast performing an unusual yet welcome addition to the show, which was a thoroughly pleasant addition to the iconic Christmas tale and adds to the Christmas cheer. With the addition of some tongue-in-cheek humour, this Riverside Studios and Assembly production is set to be a thoroughly enjoyable way to celebrate the Christmas season and the legend that is Charles Dickens.

With previous experience with Dickens’ work (Simon Callow played Dickens in The Mystery of Charles Dickens) and having voiced Ebenezer Scrooge in the 2001 film Christmas Carol The Movie, Simon Callow certainly has the tools to put on a special performance. In fact, in 2012, he is set to release a biography of Charles Dickens.

As Dickens’ ghosts spirit Ebenezer Scrooge from his past to present and future we’re taken from the depths of his dank and creaking old house right through to the festivities of Christmas. Based on Charles Dickens’ original stage production of A Christmas Carol, this new production by Simon Callow and Tom Cairns is sure to be a magnificent night out at the theatre.

This showing of A Christmas Carol is set to run for 90 mins and runs from the 8th of December until the 14th of January.
