Dubbed as ‘the untold story of the witches of Oz’ - Wicked is a new take on the original 1939 film 'The Wizard of Oz'. A prequel of sorts, Wicked takes place both before and after the original story and focuses on not on Dorothy and her exploits down the yellow brick road, but instead on the good witch Glinda and Elphaba – the wicked witch of the West and their friendship.

Wicked the musical begins simply, yet dramatically, with the death of the Wicked Witch of the West, before dashing back in time to tell the tale of the friendship between the two witches right from the start. With such completely different personalities and appearances, (Glinda – the beautiful blonde who’s popular with everyone and Elphaba – the green-skinned, raven-haired distrusted Witch of the West) the witches friendship and their exploits make for a thoroughly thrilling viewing.

Since starting production in the West End theatre in 2006, Wicked has won multiple awards and broken box office records worldwide. Tweaked for UK audiences, the production of Wicked now showing at the Appollo Victoria theatre in London is very different from the original stage production that originally debuted in San Francisco in 2003, with changes to dialogue, choreography and songs, Wicked has been a tremendous success. Year on year, people from all over flock to see this highly popular musical and the wonderful cast that do a such a smashing job with the storyline.

The critics often commend on the nature of the songs, but the main focus of Wicked the musical is quite obviously the power ballads performed by the two leading ladies (currently played by Rachel Tucker (Elphaba) and Louise Dearman (Glinda)) and it's easy to see why. Beautiful and talented actresses play the roles of the witches of Oz and the audience are easily put under their spell as they take centre stage and remind the audience who the story is all about.

Wicked the musical is originally based on the novel 'Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West' by Gregory Maguire, adapted for stage by Stephen Schwartz and is directed by Joe Mantello.

Be sure to take the whole family to see this unforgettable, award-winning musical and see the side of Oz that you missed!

Please note: the cast is soon to change with a full new cast taking over from the 12th of December 2011 (Read more about it here - 'Wicked Confirms Full New Cast Beginning 12 December 2011')

Wicked Reviews

A must see show!

I was given two Wicked tickets by a friend as a birthday surprise and wasn't sure what to expect but was absolutely amazed by the whole show, everything from the sound and colours used throughout the performance to the actors themselves was superb and made it a really enjoyable experience for my wife and I.
