Priscilla Queen of the Desert was originally an Australian comedy film released in 1994 (named 'The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert'), so it's rather fitting that the musical of the same name also started life in Australia in 2006. It proved so successful that in 2009 it moved to London and is currently showing at the Palace Theatre, lead by Richard Grieve, Don Gallagher and Oliver Thornton who play the two drag queens and a transsexual contracted to perform at a drag show at a resort in a remote town in the Australian desert.
The original Australian stage versions of Priscilla Queen of the Desert were put into motion by UK screenwriter and producer Allan Scott, who saw the potential of the character, the comedy, the sets and the costumes and bought Priscilla Queen of the Desert to life on stage. The original costume designers from the film production (Lizzy Gardiner and Tim Chappel) were taken on to recreate the magic for stage and things started to come together. Priscilla Queen of the Desert became so successful that it won several awards, including a Laurence Olivier Award, a Tony and a Drama Desk Award.
The story of Priscilla Queen of the Desert is simple, yet magnificent. The merry band of drag Queens agree to perform a drag show at the Alice Springs resort in the depths of Australia. In order to get there, the journey involves a large tour bus aptly named 'Priscilla Queen of the Desert' – and it is the journey and the things they discover on the way that make up in the story, in which they find love and friendship, as well as their dreams becoming reality.
Being a musical, you'd be right in assuming there to be a number of songs performed by the trio and the supporting crew. The score include such classics as “I Will Survive”, “Don’t Leave Me This Way”, “Downtown”, “What’s Love Got to Do With It?”, “I Love the Nightlife”, “Finally”, “Shake Your Groove Thing” and many more. Performed by drag Queens, you can expect a wide range of over the top and glamorous outfits. Critics have called it 'the best feel good show since Mamma Mia!'.
Priscilla Queen of the Desert is a bright and friendly story, packed full of wonderful songs and costumes. It has an edgy story which is moving and emotional but thoroughly enjoyable. Priscilla Queen of the Desert boasts over 500 dazzling costumes, 55 wigs, 200 headdresses and a score of 25 dance floor classics. "You will leave the theatre ready to party the night away. One of the most uplifing and joyus things I have seen on the stage. I loved the film but this show surpasses it with the atmosphere created in the theatre. Pink boa's, pink champagne and sparkles everywhere - heaven!"
