Chicago the musical is based on a play that originally took place on the stages of the theatre in 1926. In 1975, it was turned into a Broadway musical and its success continued with such force that in 1996 a Broadway revival thrust Chicago back into the limelight and turned into the 4th longest running show and longest-running musical. A year later, in 1997, Chicago the Musical made its way to the West End where it still runs to this day. With over a decade in the West End, Chicago the Musical is one of the longest-running American musicals to be shown in London theatres.
Set in 1920s Chicago, the musical is a tale of justice and show business, laced with traditional vaudeville numbers. The story starts as it means to go on with sex and death as Velma Kelly, who murdered bother her husband and sister after finding them in bed together kicks off the show with 'All That Jazz'. The sex and crime continue as Roxie Hart is arrested and thrown in jail, where she meets and befriends Velma Kelly. The two women start a nightclub act and seek fame and fortune with the help of lawyer Billy Flynn. With lawyers, criminals and show-stopping tunes, Chicago the musical is a theatrical success.
The London production of Chicago the musical is directed by Walter Bobbie and designed by John Lee Beatty, with choreography by Ann Reinking. It started life in the West End in the Adelphi Theatre where it was on show for 9 years before moving to the Cambridge Theatre. On the 7th of November 2011, Chicago moves to the Garrick Theatre, where it will continue to wow and impress audiences. The new production is set to feature Ugly Betty star America Ferrera as part of the headlining act.
