The Lion King musical is based on the famously popular Disney movie of the same name and has proved just as popular since it's original outing in the United States in 1997. In 1999, The Lion King made it's way to the Lyceum Theatre where it's been running ever since. With lyrics by award-winning lyricist and author Sir Timothy Rice and music by Sir Elton John, it's no surprise that The Lion King has proven such a success.

Directed by another award-winner (Julie Taymor), the London version of the musical has won a number of awards including the London Lifestyle Award, Visit London Award, Laurence Olivier Award, Ivor Novello Music Award and the Critic's Circle Theatre Award.

With over 50 cast members, The Lion King musical is a stunning visual and musical experience. The stage and costumes are drenched in the African spirit which makes it both immersive and enthralling. The Lion King is bought to life with music, dance, movement and colour. You'll see the sun rise over the majesty of the Serengeti Plains to the beat and heady rhythms of the African drum-beat. You'll see giraffes strutting across the stage, gazelles dancing and prancing and Lions living out the Disney story we know so well.

Expect to see some changes to the storyline in the musical compared to the film. The Lion King musical includes several new scenes, which include large narratives and more songs than the original story. The actors use life-sized puppets and costumes to portray their characters and actions – such as lunging at each other.

The simple, yet evocative story is what has kept people watching the film and visiting the theatre for years. Simba, the young lion prince is under threat from his evil uncle Scar who is pushed out of place for the throne. Scar plans to kill both Simba and his father and take the throne for himself. Escaping, Simba flees the Kingdom and makes friends with a warthog and a meerkat, where the story really comes to life. We watch as Simba comes of age and returns to his Kingdom to reclaim what is rightfully his.

The Lion King musical is a wonderful time out at the theatre for all the family. A feel good musical, with an enthusiastic, passionate cast. The music is thoroughly well-done and representative of the theme of the story. You'll find you can once again enjoy The Lion King the way Disney intended it.

Please note: strobe lighting is used several times in the show and children under three years of age will not be admitted. This show is recommended for children over five years of age. Children over three years of age will be admitted BUT they must have a valid ticket and be able to sit in their own seat quietly. Should they become restless they will be asked to leave the auditorium.

The Lion King Reviews

A Roaring Success!

Although some of the singing wasn't quite up to expectations given that some of the songs are very well known these days, the overall feeling was a great performance and very watchable show. Costumes are fantastic and everyone loves the songs from the Lion King film so it's hard not to find yourself enjoying the magic on stage.
