War Horse Canters onto the Big Screen

The multi-award winning production ‘War Horse’ is set to canter onto the big screen. Film Director Stephen Spielberg has bought the screen rights to the play, to form the basis of a new movie. Lee Hall, the Newcastle-born writer of Billy Elliot, is rumoured to have been approached to write the screenplay.

The stage show, which features remarkable life-size puppets, has been thrilling West End audiences at the New London theatre since transferring in March 2009. ‘War Horse’ has won numerous awards since it’s National Theatre debut, including Laurence Olivier Awards for Set Design and Choreography.

Spectacular Show Wins Royal Approval

Adapted by Nick Stafford, from the popular children’s novel by Michael Morpurgo, ‘War Horse’ tells the story of young farmer’s son Albert and his close bond with a workhorse, Joey.  When Joey is shipped to France at the outbreak of World War I, Albert enlists and vows to bring his beloved horse home.

The Queen and Prince William are among the many to have seen the spectacular show, with horse puppets designed by the Handspring Puppet Company. A Broadway version of ‘War Horse’ is set to open in April 2011.
