When John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Pete Best and Stuart Sutcliffe formed the Beatles, music changed forever. Backbeat is their story, live and on stage.
Backbeat was originally a movie directed by Iain Softley in 1994, which he decided to turn into a stage play with the help of the award-winning David Leveaux as director. The stage production of Backbeat originally received its world premiere in Glasgow at the Citizen’s Theatre in 2010 and has since made its way to the West End.Backbeat is the telling of the Beatles experiences during their search for success in the seedy clubs and nightspots in the red light district of Hamburg. As such, it tells the truth behind the relationships and friends and everything up to Stuart Sutcliffe’s decision to trade in potential fame for art school followed by his early death in 1962, aged just 21 years old.
Beatles fans will love it and you can expect all the Rock 'n' Roll classics from the early days of the Beatles including 'Twist & Shout', 'Rock & Roll Music', 'Long Tall Sally', 'Please Mr Postman' and 'Money'. Backbeat is not wall-to-wall Beatles hits, but instead a homage to their beginnings.
Christopher Oram, who has won multiple awards for costume design and scenic works is in charge of the set design for BackBeat and has created a gritty, monochrome atmosphere which, when combined with projection from Timothy Bird and Nina Dunn, provides a dynamic and exciting backdrop for the immersive Beatles story.
The Beatles are played by a strong cast of theatre and TV actors including – Will Payne (George Harrison), Nick Blood (Stuart Sutcliffe), Andrew Knott (John Lennon), Daniel Healy (Paul Maccartney), Oliver Bennett (Pete Best) and Will Payne (George Harrison). Backed by a strong cast and ensemble, the team of Backbeat put on a strong performance and a true testament to the Beatles legend which is both convincing and thoroughly enjoyable.
Obviously, due to the nature of theatre productions, the stage version of Backbeat differs to the original screenplay, so if you’ve seen the film, expect something different in the theatre.
