Originally premiering on the stage in the United States, in San Diego in 2004, before moving to Broadway in 2005, Jersey Boys was a documentary-style musical loosely based around the rock 'n' roll group Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. The story of the formation of the band, their rise to fame and eventual break-up is told through their music. These time periods in the band's history are broken down into four 'seasons' (or acts) with each being narrated by a separate member of the band. The audience are lead through history, from the wrong side of the tracks (in New Jersey) to the 100 million record selling rock 'n' roll band that gained worldwide fame. It includes everything from their experiences including the heartaches, the trials and tribulations and, most importantly, the music.
Jersey Boys has had such success that it won several awards including Tony's for best musical, best actor in a musical and more before making its way to the West End of London in 2008, where it is still showing today (with other performances across the world). In recent years, Jersey Boys has won around 53 major awards across the world and is a continued success.
The Jersey Boys London performance currently showing at the Prince Edward Theatre includes: Ryan Molloy (Frankie Valli), Jon Boydon (Tommy DeVito), Eugene McCoy (Nick Massi) and Matthew Wycliffe (Bob Guadio) – playing the main roles of the band members, backed up by a strong cast of singers and dancers. Directed by Des Mcanuff and written my Bob Crewe, the London Production of Jersey Boys does a tremendous job of living up to the legend of the Four Seasons and the performances put on in the States.
They do such a good job with the songs and the performance in general that you'd think you were actually watching The Four Seasons performing. Having each of the Jersey Boys talk you through their story and linking it all together with songs makes the musical flow with a finesse and a style that everyone will enjoy. You'll also see their musical style progress through the acts of Jersey Boys as it did throughout their time together. If you're planning to see Jersey Boys for the songs, you won't be disappointed. All the best Four Seasons hits are there including "Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You," "Oh, What a Night" and many more. The songs aren't just there for the sake of it, they're an integral part of the story.
Jersey Boys has proven a roaring success among critics and audiences worldwide and it's easy to see why. With such a strong musical catalogue to work from, it would be hard to go wrong.
