At a time when families all over the world come together for celebrations it’s not such a joyous meeting for 3 couples from Yorkshire.
Originally written in 1938 JB Priestley (An inspector calls, The Good companions and Bright day fame) Director Christopher Luscombe (Known for The Comedy of Errors, The Merry Wives of Windsor and The Rocky Horror Show) brings ‘When we are married’ to the Garrick Theatre, Charing Cross Road, London.
Set in Cleckleywyke, Yorkshire in 1908 When We Are Married,” trumpets a most difficult subject: marital truths. The play focuses on three nouveau riche northern couples who have gathered for a combined 25th wedding anniversary supper. They all have something in common, the Helliwells, the Soppitts and the Parkers all married in the same chapel on the same morning.
Having had their photograph taken together on their wedding day a local journalist is planning to visit them that evening and recreate the photo 25 years on.
All is well until it is discovered that the minister who conducted the service wasn’t actually authorised to do so. Social embarrassment ensues as these six respected, pillars of the community realise they have actually been living in sin.
What is next for the group? Rebel? Retaliate? Reject conjugal rights? An evening of comic mayhem erupts on the stage. Sam Kelly (of Porridge, Allo Allo and Wicked fame) plays the hen-pecked Husband of Mrs Soppitt, played by Maureen Lipman (best known for parts in sitcoms including the Lovers and Doctor at large) who takes the situation as his chance to rebel.
And over-obedient wife – who has suffered 25 years of her husband’s dreariness – gives him, ‘What for?’
Michele Dotrice (best known for her portrayal of Betty, the long suffering wife of Frank Spencer) is the put-upon Annie Parker who makes the most of the situation for a brief moment of rebellion against her insufferable husband.
As they struggle to cope with being single again, the audience are in for a feast of fun well worth digesting.
A great night out in an Edwardian parlour.
