This month sees the opening of Ira Levins most celebrated thriller Deathtrap at the Noel Coward theatre, St Martin's Lane, London. Ira Levins has also written The Stepford Wives, Rosemary’s Baby, The Boys from Brazil and A Kiss Before Dying but it’s this ingeniously clever and hilariously twisted comic murder thriller that is guaranteed to have audiences in hysterics whilst unravelling its complex plot.
Matthew Warchus directs, breathing new life into this 80’s whodunit classic. The star studded cast includes Simon Russell Beale as Sydney and Jonathan Groff (star of the hit US TV series Glee) as Clifford. Claire Skinner, Terry Beaver and Estelle Parsons also have parts to play.
To set the scene, Clifford (Jonathan Groff) is a gifted young writer who befriends Sidney Bruhl (Russell Beale), best-selling novelist and playwright who is down on his luck and financially struggling. Clifford is invited to Bruhl’s home where he brings with him the only copy of a new stage thriller script which is better than anything Bruhl has ever written. Bruhl, no longer the hit-writing scribe he once was hopes to convince Clifford to collaborate but when Clifford refuses, events become a little life-endangering. Could the desire for success ignite murder and mayhem on stage?
Deathtrap takes more unexpected turns than a novice Strictly Come Dancing contestant but we mustn’t give too much away, Deathtraps programme pleads that the play’s plot is kept close to the audience’s chest and who are we to spoil the fun for future audiences!
