It might be 70 years since our brave Lancaster bomber air crews took off at night to unleash destruction on the German war machine, but Terence Rattigan’s play Flare Path – revised by Sir Trevor Nunn and starring Sienna Miller [Patricia] and James Purefoy, [Peter Kyle] – reflects many parallel emotions experienced by Tornado air crews today.
It is 1942 at the Falcon Hotel and Peter, a Hollywood heartthrob has unexpectedly turned up at the RAF base to claim back the former love of his life actress Patricia. Shame his ex-lover has since married a bomber pilot, Teddy.
The 3 are thrown into upheaval when a new night-time mission suddenly has Teddy and his crew taking off.
Who will make the sacrifice during the long night, as Patricia finds herself at the centre of an emotional conflict as unpredictable as the war in the skies.
Based on Rattigan’s own experiences as a tail gunner in the RAF during the Second World War, his production delivers impressive wartime footage of bombers taking off on their frightening missions.
Flare Path illuminates all that’s good in aircrews’ relationships, loyalty, courage, fear and inevitably...... love.
