The next in what looks to be a long line in unexpected casting decisions in the West End, June 2009 will see chat show icon Jerry Springer making his professional stage debut in Chicago at the Cambridge Theatre. However unusual this choice may seem, other risky castings have proved to be hits as Graham Norton wows audiences of La Cage Aux Folles at the Playhouse, and Gareth Gates recently made a highly promising start in the title role of Joseph at the Adelphi. Also, Springer has much better credentials that his reputation would let on.
Although Jerry Springer is obviously best known for the controversial US chat show that made him a worldwide household name, he also has the performing arts more-or-less covered. As a student, Springer appeared in a number of college stage productions and has also taken on some small television roles in the US, including many playing himself in shows such as The X Files, Roseanne and The Simpsons. He also released an album of country song entitled Dr Talk in 1995, and came fifth in the 2006 season of Dancing with the Stars.
Unlikely all-rounder Jerry Springer will appear as Billy Flynn in Chicago from 1 June 2009
