Kerry Ellis has made a blazing return to the London production of Wicked after her triumph on Broadway. Kerry was the world’s first British Elphaba, taking over the role in London from the world’s first green girl Idina Menzel, who herself had transferred from the Broadway production.
Kerry, whose other West End credits include Fantine in Les Miserables at the Queens theatre and originating the role of Meat in the Dominion’s smash hit We Will Rock You, caused a sensation at New York’s Gershwin Theatre after she began her stint as Elphaba in June this year. For her entire season in New York, Wicked was the highest grossing show in New York and Kerry conistently took the weekly the top spot on the Actors Hall of Fame’s Top Ten theatre performers.
Kerry takes back the her broom and the Grimmerie from Alexia Khadime, who took Kerry’s place at the Apollo Victoria. Alexia made her last appearance as Elphaba with an electric and emotionally charged performance on Saturday 29 November, leaving bigger shoes for Kerry to fill than anyone could have expected.
Kerry Ellis will be playing Elphaba until 2 May 2009, after which the entire cast is subject to change. Kendra Kassebaum, who played Glinda the Good in New York, left the Gershwin at the same time as Kerry last month, and is rumoured to be taking over from Dianne Pilkington as London’s Glinda in next year’s cast overhaul. The Wicked Musical in London is currently booking until October 2009.
