The West End saw 2009 in with We Will Rock You and Wicked proudly declaring their record breaking attendance figures and ticket sales for 2008. The Society of London Theatre has followed this news with their own official figures testifying theatre’s success in spite of these hard financial times.
This week, SOLT announced that for the West End as a whole as well, 2008 has been a recording breaking year, with nearly 14 million people visiting London’s theatres, bringing in £480,563,674 in revenue.
It is particularly encouraging that the West End achieved these record breaking results largely without the help of Oliver, the current red hot show opening to triumphant reviews earlier this month. The show’s producer, Cameron MacIntosh, has already reported the biggest advance bookings for a single show as Oliver tickets have flown out of the booking office door.
