The Umbrellas of Cherbourg opens in London’s West End
Following the international smash-hit success of Brief Encounter in London and New York, the innovative theatrical creative force Kneehigh Theatre returns to the West End with their exciting new adaptation of cult French musical film The Umbrellas of Cherbourg by Jacques Demy.
Kneehigh Theatre’s daring and decadent adaptation of the movie sails our audience from the Gielgud Theatre in London into the French port of Cherbourg in the 1950’s.
The story surrounds two main characters, a young auto mechanic Guy Fouchier who is in love with an umbrella shop sales assistant Geneviève Emery. When war comes between their blossoming love tragedy strikes and Genevieve and Guy, who should be together impetuously, marry other partners instead.
The plays narrator, Meow Meow, is the former lover of Genevieve’s husband, Roland – who delivers a humorous and tearful interpretation of the couple’s despair of separation, denial and a lover’s painful betrayal. Emma Rice, Kneehigh’s artistic director, chose Meow Meow for her humour, passion and naughtiness to deconstruct Genevieve and Guy’s turbulent relationships.
Grammy and Oscar winning composer, Michel Legrand’s musical score features his greatest songs, ’Watch What Happens’ and ‘I Will Wait For You’ and the entire script sizzles in songs about sailors, suitors, sex, wine and l’mour.
Audiences should not wait to see this sensationally edgy and decadent show in 2011.
