 While Michael Ball might not seem like your typical serial killer, with a comb-over as mean as his glare, he has certainly made Fleet Street’s famous demon barber his own in the latest stage production of Sweeney Todd.

Teaming up with the Oscar-nominated Imelda Staunton, who plays his devoted sidekick and pie-shop owner Mrs Lovett, this is Ball as you’ve never seen him before – brilliant but savage.

Taking up residence in the London streets where the production is set, after a sell-out stint at the Chichester Festival Theatre, Stephen Sondheim’s musical brings a sinister air to the Adelphi Theatre.

While still reveling in London’s seedy side, director Jonathan Kent and designer Anthony Ward have moved the action from the late Victorian age to the 1930s however to combine its brutality with elements of English music hall.

Rich with Sondheim’s dark humour and wit, the musical tells the story of the notorious barber and his savage quest for justice and retribution after years of false imprisonment. Aided and abetted by Mrs Lovett, Sweeney sets about avenging the wrongs done to him and his family, in the best way he knows how – aloft his scarlet leather barber’s chair.

Accompanied by an impressive cast, which also includes John Bowe, Peter Polycarpou, Robert Burt, Gillian Kirkpatrick and Lucy May Barker, as well as a score and script infused with drama and dark comedy, this is one tasty offering – make sure you go on an empty stomach though!
