About Top Hat

It’s time to dust off your top hat and tails as, after its extensive 17-week UK tour, Irving Berlin’s Top Hat arrives at the West End’s Aldwych Theatre. And what a heavyweight of a musical it is.

Based on the original RKO motion picture that was released 77 years ago, it is widely regarded as one of the greatest dance musicals of all time and the most successful of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers’ nine collaborations, collecting four Academy Awards nominations.

Seeing Tom Chambers step into Astaire’s rather daunting shoes as Jerry Travers - a famous American tap dancer who travels to London’s West End - the musical follows Travers as he falls in love with Dale Tremont (played by Olivier Award nominee Summer Strallen) and pursues her across Europe.

With a live band of 15, the new musical includes several classic hits from Irving Berlin’s 1200-strong back catalogue, including ‘Cheek to Cheek’, ‘Top Hat White Tie and Tails’, ‘Let’s Face the Music and Dance and ‘I’m Putting All My Eggs in One Basket’.

There is also plenty of stunning tap dancing, romantic ballroom and a little bit of Busby Berkeley - as well as an ample helping of Hollywood glamour in its 200 costumes - in this celebration of 1930s song and dance.

Joining Chambers and Strallen on stage are also a number of seasoned professionals, including Martin Ball, Vivien Parry, Ricardo Afonso and Stephen Boswell.
