About War Horse

War Horse is the re-imagining for stage of the classic children’s book first penned by Michael Morpurgo in the 1980's and is a harrowing story of a horse (Joey) and his life during the great war. Taking advantage of the skills of the Handspring Puppet Company, the stage production of War Horse shows Joey growing from trembling foal to full-grown adult horse before the audience's eyes.

When it first opened in 2007, War Horse had critics and audiences both thrilled with the magnificence of the impressive puppets and the skills of their puppeteers. Simple movements of the puppets add to the realism and immersion – the flick of a tail, the tilt of a head, the scrape of a hoof on the ground – all are performed marvellously and at times, you'll swear there are real horses on the stage. When the horses begin to breathe, gallop and charge across the stage, it's easy to get lost in the story and appreciate the efforts of the cast and crew.

War Horse is a truly startling and horrific play, with an interesting perspective on war from the reality of the animals used by both sides. Joey finds himself thrust into the battle surrounded by artillery barrages, gas attacks and no man’s land. Forced to work for both sides, Joey is constantly in danger and it shows, but his original owner also puts his life on the line in order to rescue him.

If you watch the War Horse trailer on Youtube, you'll soon see what all the fuss is about. The puppets are thoroughly convincing, well handled and a marvellous thing to watch. Their movements are believable and life-like and you'll easily find yourself lost in the story which is both harrowing and emotional. Stirring music and songs add to the drama and the emotion.

War Horse has seen such success that it has recently moved to Broadway with an all-American cast and is set to début in Canada in 2012 with a US tour following shortly afterwards. War Horse recently won five Tonys, including an award for Best Play and an award for the Handspring Puppet Company. War Horse has been so successful on stage, that it's soon making its début on the big screen in an film adaptation by Stephen Spielberg.

Due to the nature of the play and its topic, it is suggested that War Horse is suitable for children aged 10 years old and above.

War Horse Reviews

An absolutely fabulous show, I'd say the best I've ever seen. After a few minutes you forget that these are puppets and they become mesmerising. The story tugs at the heart and I HAVE to SEE IT AGAIN
