The greatest piece of music theatre performed as you've never heard it before - the South African way: 35 singers, marimbas, drums and township percussion. It's a story about the trials of life: growing up, finding the love of your life, learning to be wise. It's adventure, fairy story, comedy and drama, all set to glorious music. A delight for young and old alike.
Telling the story of Prince Tamino's quest to rescue Pamina - daughter of the Queen of the Night - from the Priest of the Sun, The Magic Flute is a heart-warming and comedic story of love, adventure and reconciliation.
Played in a township setting and encompassing the various languages of the nation including English, The Magic Flute - Impempe Yomlingo features Pauline Malefane, star of the Berlin Film Festival Golden Bear-winning film U-Carmen eKhayelitsha and most recently seen at the Young Vic in Generations. Mark Dornford-May's production is faithful to the story and score of Mozart's opera but totally re-imagined with marimbas, drums and township percussion replacing traditional orchestral accompaniment.
